2007 ushered in a revolution with the introduction of the Rotax-powered Can-Am Spyder, and a second revolution comes the same decade. BRP is keen to enter the offroad sector with its first side by side vehicle (SSV), the Can-Am Commander, and Rotax expertise means the new SSV models are a step ahead of the competition. Its latest engine technology and the Rotax engines not only have sufficient power reserves, they also set the benchmark where consumption is concerned. The high-performance Rotax 800 and 1000 V-Twin EFI engines – the latter being specially developed for the Commander – not only deliver 71 and 85 HP respectively, they are also extremely economical, with the Can-Am Commander 1000 consuming around 39 percent less fuel compared with competitor vehicles. The Rotax engine in the new SSV is powerful and where necessary sophisticated and economical – but these are not its only innovative features. For the first time, it has an electronic throttle (e-gas), allowing greater control when driving over rough terrain. It also has a redesigned, rear mounted transmission for easier gear shifts and outstanding stability. Finally, at 1,200 kg, the Commander’s permissible maximum weight is twice that of normal ATVs.
